1984 Oppression Essay
In the dystopian novel 1984, George Orwell portrays a society where betrayal is not only acceptable, but it is actively encouraged through the use of psychological manipulation, which demonstrates the weakness of the individual to resist oppression. The party has built the society in such a way that when Parson is turned in by his daughter to the Thought Police he reacts with ââ¬Å"sort of a doleful prideâ⬠(233). Parson is an example of the unthinking masses of the society; he has been oppressed for so long his ability for individual thought has been greatly diminished. He doesnââ¬â¢t even question if he truly committed treason against Big Brother, he does not take into consideration that his seven year old daughter may be lying. Parsons doesnââ¬â¢t show any anger toward his daughter that betrayed him, his response is the exact opposite he is proud that his daughter is doing what is best for the party. The partyââ¬â¢s oppression of the individual begins at birth, through methodical thought conditioning. The party transforms the children of the society into model citizens that are willing to betray their own flesh and blood. See more: Foot Binding In China essay Through the partyââ¬â¢s use of psychological manipulation the framework of the society urges its citizens to pursue the enemies of Big Brother. This further cements the Partyââ¬â¢s power. The party dehumanizes them so that their inhibitions are only showing loyalty to the party. Through the domination of thought the party ensures that its citizens are completely loyal to Big Brother. The telescreen is a tool for the party; the citizens of Oceania live in constant fear of being monitored by the screens that they end up betraying their thoughts through their body language. ââ¬Å"The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look, a habit of muttering to yourself-anything that carried with the suggestion of abnormalityâ⬠(79). Oceaniaââ¬â¢s citizens donââ¬â¢t know when they are being watched, the byproduct of this is the citizens policing themselves, giving the Thought Police the ability to completely control them. The fear produced by the telescreens lead the people expose themselves to the eyes of the party, which ultimately leads them to betray themselves .The party overwhelms the minds capacity by a constant stream of propaganda coming out of the telescreen at all hours of the day allowing the party to completely dominate the minds of the people, taking away the potential of individual thought. Betrayal in the society George Orwell created in 1984 was expected. Through the domination of the individual thought, and their inability to resist that oppression, betrayal of oneââ¬â¢s comrades was only natural. Individual thought was so greatly overshadowed by the partyââ¬â¢s constant stream of propaganda in the novel that there was no place for it in the minds of the citizens. The psychological manipulation that the party inflicted on its citizens everyday made it impossible for the individual to resist oppression.

A Brief Description of World War II
World War II FRQ World War II was a period of great change for the United States in terms of race, economics, and the demographic of American life. World War II pulled America out the Great Depression and revitalized the nation. Jobs were being created by the thousands and pulling people into big cities. The cities demographics were changing with the influx of immigrants and minorities looking for work. However, with the new increase in economic prosperity brought by Americaââ¬â¢s helping supply the world with war goods, World War II also showed Americaââ¬â¢s still heavy racial tensions.World War II brought America out the Great Depression of the 30s and reenergized the economy. Jobs were created as Americaââ¬â¢s factories were producing goods for the war effort. Places such as Mobile, Alabama grew exponentially across the United States, beyond anyoneââ¬â¢s expectations. The war was creating thousands of jobs in these cities where all the factories were and that in turn a ttracted people from all over to these cities in search of work. People were able to get well-paying jobs in these factories and the quality of life for many increased. However, as the war dragged on, there was a decrease in goods and the government began demanding that people begin rationing. This created a sort of black market for goods. In fact, one in every nine transactions during the war was illegal. The increase of jobs in these cities also helped change the demographic of America. Waterbury, Connecticutââ¬â¢s work force was mainly comprised of Italian immigrants during World War II. Japanese people were a large part of Sacramentoââ¬â¢s overall population. Mobile, Alabama attracted many people, many families from hundreds of towns from around the state. With this huge influx of workers, Mobileââ¬â¢s schools became over flooded, making it one of the worst school systems in the nation. World War II was somewhat of a double-edged sword at the home front in the United Stat es. Even though it helped pull America out of one of the worst depressions in its history, it also unveiled the heavy racial tensions that were still apart of American life. In Mobile white and black people got along well as long as the status quo was minded. However, as people began getting better pay, blacks were able to afford to buy houses and cars. They were being paid more or less the same amount as their white counterparts. This made most whites upset, they felt that black people were getting out of place and were behaving ââ¬Å"uppity. â⬠Racial tensions grew and began exploding in race riots in cities like Detroit. The tensions between the white and black workers in Mobile got so intense, the shipyard became segregated and there were two separate ferries; one for blacks, the other for whites. Also, people began weary of Japanese loyalty to America. This fear turned into action when the Nisei Japanese were put into internment camps.Despite this, Italian and German immig rantsââ¬â¢ assimilation into America was sped up because of the war, unlike during the First World War. In conclusion, World War II caused various changes in the different facets of American life. The war helped revive Americaââ¬â¢s economy and helped drag it out of the grips of depression. The war also shook up the make-up of American society and caused an increase of people living in large cities. However, it also showed America that it still had a long way to go in terms of racial equality and was an omen for the Civil Rights movement that was to come during the Fifties.

The Impact of International Trade on U.S. Economy Essay
The Impact of International Trade on U.S. Economy - Essay Example By July 2007, the number of negotiated and effected agreements had risen to 205. The United States has also had its share in the international trade (Peridy, 2005). She has entered into trade agreements with countries from Africa, South East Asia, and Europe. International trade brings along certain factors, which impact on the U.S economy, either favorably or unfavorably. Some effects of this trade include provision of new markets and access to goods and services at subsidized prices (Sun and Reed, 2009). In the present paper, the impact of international trade on the U.S economy is investigated. It is hypothesized that international trade favorably impacts the U.S economy. The literature reviews that follow will attempt to illustrate and support the hypothesis. Literature Review In a research article by Peridy (2005), three crucial questions were posed to guide the study. First, does the United States face a trade deficit with respect to Middle East and North American (MENA) countri es? Secondly, has the deficit resulted from the Euro-Mediterranean (Euromed) agreement? Thirdly, what trade potential does the US hold in this area? (Peridy, 2005). The focus of the investigation is on the trade relations between the US and MENA countries, specifically favorable trade using a short, descriptive analysis. It is hypothesized that, the US will trade unfavorably with the MENA countries comparatively to other OECD countries. The investigation focused on market shares and export levels, and calculated several indexes of export position between the US and MENA countries. The result of this investigation agreed with the hypothesis that there was unfavorable US export performance with respect to MENA countries in comparison with other OECD nations. The result indicated that majority of MENA countries are ranked after other OECD countries in US export preference list. In comparison to other exporters, the US seems to export four-times lesser than the MENA countries (Peridy, 2 005). The difference in trade between the US and MENA countries, and the US and Euromed countries may partially be attributed to the long distance between the US and MENA markets, which infers high transport cost to the trading partners (Peridy, 2005). The result of the relative market share also reveals the unfavorable position of trade between MENA countries and the US, with the US having potential in the MENA markets. It is also reported that exports from the MENA countries to the US has continued to dwindle. Contrastingly, the US preserved its favorable position relative to the other OECD countries (Peridy, 2005). These results come together to affirm the hypothesis that international trade favorably impacts on the US economy. One shortcoming of the study is that it relies on predictions that are prone to change (Peridy, 2005). It rests on out-of-sample predictions that calculate what proportion of MENA countriesââ¬â¢ exports if they would have behaved akin to countries fully incorporated into the world economy. However, this approach may deter the ambiguous interpretation of residuals. Next, the topic of measures of international relative prices in relation to its impact on the US economy is discussed with China as the primary point of reference. In a research article by Thomas, Marquez, and Fahle (2009), several specific questions are addressed. First, is there a disparity in pricing between exports from China and those from her trading partners? Second, does the World Development Indicator (WDI)ââ¬â¢s new price index affect the appraisal of USAââ¬â¢s international relative prices? Third, does the weighting scheme employed in aggregating prices

Examine the portrayal of women and isolation in the yellow wallpaper Essay
Examine the portrayal of women and isolation in the yellow wallpaper by charlotte perkins gilman - Essay Example It is these factors; the treatment of herself and women in general, the "rest-cure", the isolation, and the yellow wallpapered room, which eventually drive her to insanity and hysteria. Thesis Gilman tells the story of a woman isolated in her own house through one of her own life experiences in perhaps, an over exaggerated, dramatic kind of way. During the Eighteenth century, women were generally viewed as weak. Women did not work to make money for that was a man's job. Women generally stayed around the house and did household chores. In the narrator's case, the opposite occurs. Husband John forbids for his wife to work or write while she is ill. She feels that it is this "prescription" that keeps her ill. She explains how she wants to rearrange her room if she can not have the downstairs room. John again makes an "executive" decision and says no stating that, "You know the place is doing you good, and really, dear, I don't care to renovate the house just for a three months' rental" (Gilman). It shows how men had the power over women and gave complete disregard for simple requests. The narrator in "The Yellow Wallpaper" spends so much time in her room that she eventually becomes obsessed with this yellow wallpaper. She becomes so obsessed that she actually believes that she is the woman in the wallpaper. She is the one clim bing out and reaching out through the bars. She becomes delusional. In the Eighteenth century, hysteria was more common in women. According to a professor in bioethics and assistant professor of internal health at Case Western Reserve University, Sana Loue states that "Hysteria, in particular, was believed to be an affliction specific to women. Hysteria was brought on by feelings of depression, nervousness, or crying and could manifest in the form of hysterical "fit" similar to an epileptic seizure" (Gilman). The subjugation that prevailed in the society made women treated as subhuman. They were just considered as vessels of fertility and had the mere privilege of a set of ovaries and a womb. The feminist ideologies of the narrator are evident throughout her talk. She was found subordinate to her husband John who believed that women are frail and can never make decision of their own. The narrator's great passion for life and her strong feministic beliefs do not allowed her to be in the controlled world of her husband. Her house appeared as a prison for her all through these days. The narrator was always under the care of someone, her brother and then her husband. Both of them being doctors do not understand her mind. They are least flexible and only look for her physical recovery (Bak 199). They do not allow her to indulge in something that she wanted to indulge in. She wanted to write; may be she wanted to pour out her depression into words. She was of the belief that more mental and ph ysical activity would solve her problems. She never desired to have physical rest. However her husband and brother were not able to understand this and compelled her to be under complete rest that would make her free from any activity. They were not able to comprehend their self and did not even attempt to understand her. The male dominated world never wanted the husbands to understand their wives. The narrator's husband and broth

The Role of Natural Capital in the Week versus Strong Sustainability Essay
The Role of Natural Capital in the Week versus Strong Sustainability Debate - Essay Example The issue of sustainability is therefore subject to both traditional and contemporary arguments, the underlying interest being to define the natural world in the view of both arguments. The weak versus strong sustainability debate emanates from both environmental and economic concerns. A sustainable development is one that is rooted on the strongholds of both the economy and the environmental. In this regard, two principle concepts emerge. These are: natural and manufactured capital. The debate surrounding these two concepts gives rise to weak versus strong sustainability debate, with the role of natural capital being the focal point in the debate. The defining variables of both weak and strong sustainability are essential to consider in the evaluation of the role of natural capital in the context of the two. Sustainable development is defined as that development that provides the potential and ability to meet present needs without jeopardising the potential and ability of future gen erations to meet their own needs (Hartwick, 2007, p.972-974). In other words, the needs of both present and future generations are central to the achievement of sustainable development. It is important to note that the needs referred to are cultural, social, economic and political in nature. ... The process to sustainable development is not a smooth process. There are biases associated with sustainable development, each of which influences the process in one way or another. These biases include: tragedy of the commons, common costs, private profits, uncertainty, future discounting among others (Pearce, 2006, p.85-101). A number of phenomena are presented by the highlighted biases. Common ownership of resources is evident, exacerbating the need to grab resources within the shortest time possible. Industrial pollution is inevitable in land, air and water. Furthermore, the cost of pollution is transferred to the society, while profits are reaped by privately owned enterprises. The process of sustainable development is therefore highly characterized by externalities, both positive and negative. Uncertainty continues to encompass economic and environmental undertakings prior to sustainable development. Global warming around the world remains evident, but its extent is uncertain. There are underlying ecological and/or economic disasters that need to be accounted for in sustainable development process. It is also argued that sustainable development is primarily concerned with the future. While this is true, the present must be set in a way that aids concern for the future. The availability of resources today does not guarantee the same availability in future. Utilization and conservation of resources for the present and future generations yields the weak versus strong sustainability debate, with emphasis on natural capital today and in future. Natural capital is defined as the capacity of the environment to provide goods and services for use by the population (Pezzey, 2009, p.26). The population in this case

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Research Paper
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) - Research Paper Example According to Ray (2011) there are 3 dimensions that significantly control the changes they include: customization, support and consultation. Most of the ERP systems are implemented in stages. For a large company, the project can take approximately 14 months and can require almost 150 consultants. Small companies can take months while implementing ERP while big and multinational companies can take several years. However, the implementation time can be reduced by employing customizations to fasten the process. ERP has the benefit of saving the companyââ¬â¢s time and its overall expenses. The organizationââ¬â¢s management can formulate decisions more quickly and with minimal errors. Through the realization of fewer errors, the data becomes reliable and clear within the entire organization (Ray, 2011). The system improves the organizationââ¬â¢s efficiency and subsequently its outputs quality (Ray, 2011). Through the smooth running of internal processes, improved outputs can be realized for example manufacturing and customer service. It necessitates the flexibility of an organization. The management software can assist the organization to adapt easily to changes due to the presence of less organizational structures that enhances its internal and external components. ERP promotes collaborations between varied business functions. In modern organizations, data can be in the form of emails, audio, video, files which require varied operations (Ray, 2011). ERP necessitates the employees to collaborate more effectively with the content without actually mastering their individual processes. The management software ensures real time achievement of information. ERP promotes a comprehensive view of the companyââ¬â¢s status in real time, which the upper level management can utilize in making proper decisions (Ray, 2011). The system ensures effective coding of an

Image of masculinity through tv program such as two and a half men, Research Paper
Image of masculinity through tv program such as two and a half men, - Research Paper Example a. Charlie Sheenà asà Charlie Harperà (season 1ââ¬â8)- the archetype of hedonistic bachelor to the mould of Hugh Hefner of Playboy. In the sitcom, Charlie works as jingle/children songwriter and makes more money than his brother Alan who is always in dire straits due to the alimony that he has to pay to his wife Judith. Charlie is the dominant male figure in the sitcom. b. Jon Cryerà asà Alan Harper ââ¬â Alanââ¬â¢s character articulates soft version of masculinity although it was portrayed as subordinate to the hedonistic type of masculinity with Charlieââ¬â¢s inordinate sarcasm and banter with Alan. c. Angus T. Jonesà as Jake Harper ââ¬â Jake portrays the underachieving son of Alan and Judith. Although Jake is Alanââ¬â¢s son, Jake mirrors the behavior of his uncle Charlie more than his father Alan. The character of Jake provides the subtle approval of Charlieââ¬â¢s hedonistic behavior in the sitcom. Masculinity has always been associated with a powerful social position that is based on class, race, and sexuality, wage structure and other parameters of manhood that spells dominance. This is reinforced through gender order within societies where men are usually ranked as more powerful and more prestigious than others. Although most of this stereotyping is structured through menââ¬â¢s dominance over women or the latterââ¬â¢s dependence on men, it can also be the case of male dominance over other males with other males also dependent to the dominant male. This structure is also present in the animal kingdom with the presence of the Alpha Male. The three characters in the television sitcom Two and a Half Menà makes an interesting case about images of masculinity in contemporary American society. Each of the characters performs their role and acts them out in accordance with how such character relates to the world and how it perceives the world. Often, the expression of

Lab report about lenses Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
About lenses - Lab Report Example All these have been exemplified well in the analysis segment and discussion segment. The main objective of this experiment is the determination of the focal length as well as the focal points of lenses. In this entire experiment, two methodologies for finding out the spherical lensââ¬â¢s focal length were chosen. They refer to the lens replacement methodology, and the lens formula methodology. The first method sets basis on the lens formula which is very essential when it comes to this concept. This formula states that there is a linear relationship between, image distance (v), object distance (u), and focal length (f) of the spherical lens (Boston, 2010).Therefore, after recording some variables regarding the object and the image distances, the computation of the focal length will be a very easy task. This can be done using the following formula: On the other hand, the lens replacement technique has to do with a number of frameworks. For instance; if the screen and the lamp housing are separated from maybe (a) to around (s) cm, two positions between shall definitely be established, hence leading to the formation of an image on a screen. This is with accordance to the concept of reversibility of light. From that point, the focal length can hence be computed using the following formula: The experiment started after assembling all the apparatus that included; the optical lens, light source, optical benches, lens mounts, as well as the screens. Using the lens mounts, a lens was mounted on a flat surface. The targeted object was then placed at a specific distance in front of the lens. The screen was thus placed at the rear end so as to monitor the reflected image. The object distance was slightly altered with, and based on this, the consequent variation on the image distance was thus determined. The same procedure was repeated with a constant variation in the object distances. The results were the recorded accordingly for further

Education and Teachers Essay Example for Free
Education and Teachers Essay Teachers in Taiwan enjoy higher occupational prestige and great job satisfaction. In Germany teachers enjoy teaching. Teachers in China are highly respected. Those within the Indian culture feel that teachers are next to God. American teachers believe that teaching helps societys well-being. Teachers in England are poorly regarded. Teachers are constant companions and they mold studentââ¬â¢s personality. They are role models and they motivate the students. However, according to individual experience there are different kinds of teachers some are friendly ,some are strict and others are ideal teachers. The first kind of teachers are friendly teachers. They combine both the guidance of a teacher and the understanding of a friend. Friendly teachers act like philosophers and guides. A friendly teacher helps the students to choose the right path . These teachers are closer to the students and better educators because they understand students needs and help them accordingly. Personality development and positive attitude of the each student is their first priority. Friendly teachers never criticize their students in the class ,and they are always gentle with them. My 8th grade math teacher is the perfect example for this. He was very friendly with us. He used to stay after school to help with our math problems. He used to meet our parents on regular basis. I really enjoyed his teaching methods. He is one of my favorite teachers. So friendly teachers are very important for the students future. The other kinds of teachers are strict teachers. Strict teachers are very tough on students. They dislike any mistakes or carelessness. These kind of teachers have high expectations for their students. Disciplining their students is important for the strict teachers. Students have to be extra cautious about these kinds of teachers. For example, my 6th grade music teacher was very strict. He wanted us to memorize each note. I was nervous when I started that class. I wanted to quit the class because of his strictness. After I realized that he was just helping me through tough times, I admired him. Because of his discipline, I continued the music class. Even though strict teachers are rough sometimes, some students need these kind of teachers. The third kinds of teachers are ideal teachers. Some teachers sacrifice their lives to help the students. They are humble, self -disciplined, helpful, honest ,creative and available to all the students. By respecting the students and giving self confidence to their students, these teachers help the students to become good citizens. They are perfect role models and they also have great hearts. Anne Marie Murphy, 52 is the perfect example for these kinds of teachers. She was a Sandy Hook Elementary teacher who died to protect her students during the shooting. She sacrificed her life for her students. She was the perfect role model. Students who have these kind of ideal teachers are very lucky. Teachers do not all teach same way. Students like their teacher according to their own individual preference. The relationship between teachers and their students is the key element in creating an educational atmosphere that is both pleasant and effective. Teachers are different, however, they all have something in common, and that is the desire to help their students.

Pfizer produces many house hold famous medicine like Lipitor, Viagra and Celebrex. Pfizer has 103,700 employees and in No. 81 of Carbon Disclosure Rating. And here are some important data. (Table 2)In the highly competitive pharmaceutical industry, Pfizer has these main competitors: Ankur Drugs and Pharma Ltd. and Bayer. 1.2 Analyst Coverage 1.2.1 Analyst Opinion This table (1.1) shows the analyst opinion to recommendation trends. We can see strong buy and buy both have a high score while the other three have a very low score. It suggests that investors to buy this stock but do not suggest long-term hold. 1.2. 2 Analyst Estimate Here these two tables show the analyst estimate on Pfizer. They are just a part of the analyst estimate. Earnings history (1.2) shows that the difference between EPS Estimate and EPS actual is very small. So the estimate was quite accurate. 1.2.3 Price Target Summary The recent stock price of PFE is about $22.56. This price is a little lower than the price target in table (1.3). It does not mean it is not good. At least this price is higher than its low target. Pfizers stock is not bad and still have chance to perform better. 1.3 Analysis of Pfizers financial statements 1.3.1 Balance Sheet Analysis In general, the total amount of the assets of Pfizer decreased from 212.949 million (in 2009) to 188.002 million (in 2011). This may because Pfizer wanted to give up unattractive investments and focused on its innovation core. Total liabilities decreased continuously. It indicates Pfizers ability of repayment of debt was not bad. Current liabilities decreased 1.98% from 2010 to 2011 and 23.1% from 2009 to 2010. Changes of total liabilities were similar. On stockholders equity, its total number also decreased as the result of its decrease of total assets. Due to the decrease in total assets, the stockholders equity decreased 6.4% from 2011 to 2010 and 2.4% from 2010 to 2009. (Graph 1) We can calculate Debt-Equity Ratio, Current Ratio, and Quick Ratio in 3 years. (Table 3) As we can see from the table 1, Pfizers financial situation in 2011 was not bad. 1.3.2 Income Statement Analysis In 2011, total revenue was 67.425 million, a 0.54% increase over 2010 and a 36.85% increase over 2009. Operating income in 2011 was 12.762 million and net income was 10.009 million, both of them increased. Gross profit was not very obvious but we can find a sharp increase from 2009 to 2010. (Graph 2) In 2011, ratio of gross profit and total revenue was 77.63%. Operating expenses of total revenue proportion in three years were around 60%. It shows Pfizers ability of controlling in operating expenses was better in 2010 and 2009. (Table 4) Graph 3 shows that changes in gross margin, operating margin, net profit margin, ROA and ROE. The companys operating conditions were very stable. (Graph 3) 1.3.3 Cash Flow Analysis Here is a table shows that three years cash flows of three kinds of activities. (Table 3) In 2009, cash flows from operating activities were 16.587 million and in 2010. If investing activities cant bring enough money to make up cash outflows, cash flows from investing activities would be negative. In 2011, Pfizers cash flows from investing activities were 2.2 million. Pfizers investments were effective and they created a positive cash flow and can create profit. (Table 4) Generally speaking, the larger the cash flows from financing activities the more pressure of debt the company will be faced with. We can see in 2010 and 2011, Pfizers was under huge pressure. All in all, Pfizer has a good financial situation. 1.4 Summary of Pfizers Challenges 2011 was generally a good year for Pfizer, Inc. Revenues increased 1%, Net income also had significant gains. However, the company still faces diverse challenges from many aspects, which can have a long term impact on Pfizers performance. U.S. Healthcare Legislation Enacted Since 2010 It brought two negative influences: 1. A $648 million reduction to Revenues, related to higher, extended and expanded rebate provisions and the Medicare coverage gap discount provision. 2. An extra $248 million expense in informational, sales and administrative, related to the fee payable charged by the federal government. Loss of Expiration of Intellectual Property Rights It can be an adverse factor and decline total revenues. When the patent protection has expired, Pfizer loses exclusivity on these products and generic pharmaceutical manufacturers can produce similar products and sell them for a lower price. Problems in Productivity and Regulatory Environment Pfizer devoted significant resources to research and development; these activities involve a high risk and may take many years to transfer research achievements into products. Besides, there is no assurance that the development of any particular product will achieve desired clinical success, be approved by regulators and commercially. If Pfizer failed, sunk costs lost, which can be a huge loss. 1.4.4 Pfizer is Under Pressures of Pricing and Access Governments, healthcare organizations and other payer groups implement price controls and require price cuts in order to pay less in purchasing Pfizers products. There were government regulated price reductions for certain products beginning in 2011. Whats more, health insurance and social welfare plans continue to limit access to some of Pfizers medicines by setting restrictions in the increased use of generics. 1.4.5 Challenges from Poor Macroeconomic Environment We believe that with high unemployment rate and increases in co-pays, patients tend to buy generics, delay treatments, skip doses or use less effective treatments to reduce costs. During 2011, portions of the revenues are exposed to fluctuations in foreign exchange rate. Pfizer need to seek appropriate management in foreign exchange rate risk as it operates in multiple foreign currencies 2. Stock Price Analysis 2.1 Track Pfizers Stock Price in the Last 3 Years 2.1.1 2009(Graph 4) We can find that the stock price continued going down from Jan. to Mar. However, it went up until the end of the year. Stock price in Mar is the lowest all the year and the stock price at the beginning of the year and the end of the year are almost the highest. The highest is nearly $19, and the lowest is less than $12. 2.1.2 2010(Graph 5) The chart show us that the stock price in 2010. Generally speaking, the stock price went down from Jan to Jul. We can see the stock price in Jul is the lowest number throughout the year, and it was 14.14 dollars per unit. After Jul, the stock price gradually rose. But between Aug and Sep, the stock price experienced a decline within a narrow range. This circumstance also happened between Nov and Dec. The highest price occurred in Jan, and it was 20.00 dollars per unit. 2.1.3 2011(Graph 6) It seems that the chart of 2011 was a little complex. From Jan to Jun the general momentum of the stock price was up though a few small declines. From Jun to Aug, the number experienced a decline by a large margin after Aug, the statistics generally rose up though some declines. The highest price was 21.83 dollar per unit in Dec, and the lowest price was in Aug, and the number was 16.66 dollar per unit. 2.2 Calculate Stock Price of the Company To calculate the stock price of the company, I will use the formula EPSÃÆ'-P/E=P. EPS=NI/ SO. I will calculate the stock price of the company in 2012. (Graph 7) 1. Highest and lowest PE Ratio in 2009 are 14.79 and 11.45, so the average ratio is 13.12. 2. The 2 ratios in 2010 are 23.52 and 13.58, so the average is 18.55. 3. The 2 ratios in 2011 are 19.34 and 12.28, so the average ratio is 15.81. (Graph 8) The EPS in 2009, 2010 and 2011 are 1.235, 1.205, 1.255. According to P=EPSÃÆ'-P/E, stock price in 2009, 2010, 2011 are 16.20à ¼Ã

â19.84. 2.3 Assessment of the Current Stock Price According to the Income statement, PFE has earnings per share of 1.27, the average P/E is $17.81, estimate a value of PFE using P/E as a valuation multiple. Thus, P=$1.27*17.80=$22.6060B It assumes that PFE will have similar future risk. Assuming NVS is comparable to PFE in term of its underlying business NVS has earnings per share of $3.55, the average P/E is $15.39, under the same assumption, P=$3.55*15.39=$54.6345B. Compare to the two major competitors, PFE share price is relatively low. According to Income Statement, PFE has EBITDA of $27.56B and has an enterprise value to EBITDA multiple of $6.71, shares outstanding of 7.54B and debt of $38.96B Enterprise value would be V=$27.56B*6.71=$184.9276, estimate PFEs share price: P=(184.9276-38.96)/7.54=$19.2361. As this estimation is based on enterprise value, it is more reliable than the first one. It is overvalued obviously when its stock price being $22.66 per share. Similarly, NVS has EBITDA of $17.05, enterprise value to EBITDA multiple of 8.81, shares outstanding of $2.42 and debt of $24.59. NVS share price would be: P=(17.05*8.81-24.59)/2.42=$51.9093 As Comparables only provide information regarding the value of a firm relative to other firms in the comparison set, using multiples will not help us determine if an entire industry is overvalued. According to the research, PFE share price is much less than NVS, I would suggest that PFE is relatively less deserving investment. According to the Balance Sheet, dividend paid is $6.234. , it is easy to get the dividend paid annually: Div=$6.234/7.54=$0.8268 The share price is $22.66, suppose investors hope the constant dividend growth model would based on a 4% growth rate, we would estimate a stock price of P=0.8268/(0.4811-0.04)=$1.8744 We can calculate the growth rate: g=r-Div/P=0.4811-o.8268/22.66=1.16%. Investors would feel disappointed if invest in PFE as the growth rate is relative lower than he/her expectations. 2.4 Value of Pfizers Stock Price Compared with Competitors From statistics online, we can know that the 52week range of Pfizer is 16.63-23.3, Roches is 115.1-169.2, and Eli Lilys is 33.75-42.03. Obviously, the stock price of Roche changes the most, the changed absolute amount of 54.1. A risk lover may prefer this kind of stock because it can change by a larger scale, and if we can seek this opportunity well, huge profits can be achieved. Compared with Roche, Pfizer stock has a large advantage. The change scope of Pfizer stock is not big, which indicates that it is relatively stable, and a risk-averse may prefer this kind stock. The perceived benefit of any gain is outweighed by the perceived cost of an equivalent loss. Most people are risk-averse, so Pfizer stock has an excellent competitive advantage and suitable to hold for a long time. Besides, to compare the value of the stock price, analyzing the P/E ratio is the most traditional method. Pfizer earned $1.24 per share last year and the stock is trading at 22.38, so the stock has a P/E ratio of approximately 18.05-to-1.Similarly, the P/E ratio of Roche is 15.04, the P/E ratio of Eli Lily and Company is 10.7. Generally, the lower the P/E ratio, the better value the stock represents. Thus, in this case Pfizer is less competitive than his competitor, Roche and Eli Lily and Company. 2.5 Beta of Pfizer and Comparison with Its Competitors The beta of Pfizer is 0.64, the beta of Roche is 0.66, and the beta of Eli Lily and Company is 0.37. Beta is a risk index, can be used to measure fluctuation of one stock price relative to the whole stock market. The bigger the absolute amount, the larger the change of profit .The stock of Pfizer and its competitors, Roche and Eli Lily and Company, all can be regarded as low risk stocks. 3. Summary 3.1 Major Developments of Pfizer during 1Q of 2012 During the 1st quarter of 2012, Pfizers revenues were $15.4 billion, a decline of 7% compared with $16.5 billion in the year-ago quarter and the unfavorable impact of foreign exchange of $57 million, or less than 1%. Established products unit revenues increased 17% in comparison with prior year period, obviously driven by recent launches of generic versions of some products. Revenues of Lipitor were $383 million, which made a great contribution to the company. In addition, revenues were positively influenced by the entry of multi-source generic competition in the U.S. Emerging markets unit revenues grew 9% due to continued demand growth in China, Russia and Mexico. In animal health unit, revenues increased 6%, primarily due to the purchase of King Pharmaceuticals. Nutrition unit revenues gained 8%, created by making benefits from the launch of successful new products, increased marketing activities and overall strength in emerging markets, especially China. Pfizers first-quarter 2012 financial performance is pleased; however, it still faces fierce competition from other companies. Pfizer need to focus its problems in exclusivity and financial management. 3.2 Summary of All We Have Learnt About Pfizer Pfizer is better than others. It could be name recognition, innovation, market share or any other attributes that makes a company stand out from the herd. From what has been discussed, we may draw the conclusion that there are three ideas to contribute the success of Pfizer. Innovation creates success and being innovative in your business is one of the keys to being successful. Innovation is the introduction of new processes, new ways of doing things and revolutionizing how things have been accomplished previously. The most surprising thing is Pfizer cannot research an influential drug independently in the past 10 years of 20 century. Although it invested huge amount of money in R D, it seems more like a marketing company. Throughout Pfizers development in recent years, its success can be summed up that use the advantage of large-scale and well-capitalized to strengthen the ability in value chain in marketing. Through buying mature technology, products and combination new companies, building alliance with competitors to consolidate its market share. Giving full play to the enthusiasm of its medical representatives, integrating the advantages of its marketing network, and enhancing core competitiveness, thus achieve a leading position in the industry. In conclusion, Pfizer is a rare example of successful combination of R D and marketing strategies in international pharmaceutical companies. 3.3 Should We Buy Pfizers Stock or Not Pfizer has a good ability in finance, improved control in operation. For big investors, I would recommend Pfizer, which requires low risk, stable growing dividends, and long term return. Despite Pfizer stock price is relative lower than its competitors, big investors can gain large amount of cash by purchasing large amount of shares. However, I will not recommend Pfizer to retail investors. It would not be wise to invest in a company which may take years to transfer research investments into product profits. Higher return indicates higher risk; it would be too risky for retail investors to take the gamble. Quick money never stays too long. The emotional destruction of Americans could be considered much greater and can be captured in one word: "fear." Because of this fear, most Americans were more willing to sacrifice many of the freedoms that make this country great in exchange for added security. United States citizens were much more concerned about their security than their freedoms. As the President declared war against terrorism, an implicit war was declared against some of our freedoms. My Childhood House :: Free Essays
My Childhood House When I was a child I used to live in a house which was very old and very big. To add a bit of ambience, there is one of the largest graveyards in the nation right across my street. It used to give me creeps especially around Halloween. The house was quite old if I remember rightly; I think it was built in the 1800s. There would be usual sounds of an old house, the creeks and groans and the occasional sounds here and there. The cellar was very eerie as most cellars would be. There was one room in the cellar; it was a storage room that was most disturbing. No one ever went in there unless it was necessary, no one stayed in there longer than they had to. My brother and I would swear we saw eyes watching us from the dark room sometime. My brother used to tell me the weird dreams he used to have. It seemed as if the house was trying to communicate with him. One of the dreams he had was of small children writing on the living room walls, and an adult, maybe one of the children's parent, yelling at them. Not long after, my parents decide to decorate the living room. We had friend and relative's helping us helping us strip off the wallpaper. There must have been at least twenty layers of wallpaper. Sure enough one of the layers of wallpaper had writing on it, in what looked like crayon marks. Calculations such as 1+1=2 were written on the wall. The moment I saw this I was astonished, my brother and I quickly ran to my parents and told them of this sinister discovery. My parents didn't think much of it but only coincidence; after all, my mother is an adamant disbeliever in the supernatural. My brother and I decided to investigate further, because we were kids exploration was fascinating for us. We decided to stay awake all night in our separate bedrooms that were situated on the upper level.

Trading Salvation for Personal Gratification in Anna Karenina Essay
Trading Salvation for Personal Gratification in Anna Karenina The epigraph of Anna Karenina: "Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord," implies that judgment is a theological entitlementà (Romans, 12:19).à Tolstoy uses both social and moral issues to illustrate his characters' attitudes towards religion.à For Oblonsky, Vronsky, and Karenin, religious values are secondary.à Their lives are devoted to establishing a social position and monetary gain.à Levin finds salvation and happiness because they learn to live for something beyond themselves and devote their lives to spreading the goodness of the Lord.à Like Levin, Anna responds to her emotional instincts, but she is hindered by society's judgment.à Anna distances herself from salvation by seeking only personal gratification in her love affair. à à à à à à à à à à à Oblonsky values his indulgent social life and his occupation above all else.à He lies in direct contrast to Levin, who focuses not on the relentless pursuit of pleasure, but takes joy in his work and devotes himself to his loved ones. Stiva finds meaning in life only from his personal interactions, although he often ignores commitments to his wife and children.à Religion is just another social institution, and he has no relationship with God: "Oblonsky could not bear standing through even a short church service without his feet hurting, and could not understand the point of all those terrible, highfalutin words about the other world when it would be very gay to live in this one too"à (7).à Likewise, Vronsky is totally dedicated to his military career and his status as a high society player.à He pursues Kitty with no intention of marrying her; he deserts her the moment he lays eyes on Anna.à Vronsky seems ... ...piness with the man she loves.à She refuses to get a divorce because she does not want to compromise her son's future. Her character deteriorates when her only goal in life is to keep Vronsky in love with her.à Levin is saved when he learns to live for something beyond himself; Anna moves away from God when she focuses only on keeping the interest of her lover.à She tells Dolly that she has no plans for more children because she fears that her pregnancy will make Vronsky disenchanted with her.à Anna's self-assertion leads her to abandon "faith in God, in goodness as the sole purpose of mankind" and death is the only way for her to escape the world that she sees as full of hateà (849).à Her last words are, "Lord, forgive me for everything!"à (816).à à à à à Works Cited: Tolstoy, Leo. Ignorance to the Truth Essay
Often in tragic literature, authors infuse characters with a tragic flaw such as hubris. One work that explores an exuberant amount of pride is Oedipus Rex by Sophocles. In this play, Thebes is stricken with a plague and Oedipus, the King, will sacrifice anyone to save it. In the process of finding a solution, Oedipus realizes that he fulfills the prophecies that say he will kill his father and marry his mother. In the play, Sophocles shows Oedipusââ¬â¢ hubris by using irony. Characterization is also used to enhance the effects of pride on Oedipusââ¬â¢ ability to see logistically. Both characterization and irony play an important role in supporting the theme that excessive pride is a bad thing because it prevents people from viewing life with logic and leads to their downfalls. In the drama, Oedipus Rex, readers analyze the theme by looking at Oedipusââ¬â¢ tragic flaw. Sophocles describes how Oedipus changes from being a powerful and majestic king to being ââ¬Å"the worldââ¬â¢s outcastâ⬠(Sophocles 66). For instance, Oedipusââ¬â¢ hubris is shown from the beginning of the play when he steps down from the altar. He addresses the people of Thebes to discuss the deadly plague that has come to Thebes. Oedipus explains that he hears the ââ¬Å"sound of prayer and lamentationâ⬠and that he himself ââ¬Å"who bears the famous name,â⬠has come to listen to his people (Sophocles 4). Oedipus shows how prideful he is when he refers to himself as being famous amongst the people of Thebes. Also, the fact that he comes forth when he hears prayers, indicates that he views himself as an equivalence to the gods because he defeated the Sphinx. Oedipusââ¬â¢ boasting relates to the theme because it foreshadows his tragic fate that he will kill his father and marry his mother as destined by the gods. Oedipusââ¬â¢ pride continues throughout the play when the messenger announces the death of King Polybos of Corinth. Specifically, Oedipus thinks that he is the son of King Polybos and that he escapes his prophecies by leaving Corinth long ago. Oedipus explains that he ââ¬Å"never touches [Polybos],â⬠so he will not ââ¬Å"give heed to the birds that jangle above [Pythianââ¬â¢s] headâ⬠(Sophocles 50). Oedipus fails to realize that Polybos is not his real father, which relates to the theme of hubris. The overwhelming sense of pride in himself is what makes him blind to what is real. To support the theme of Oedipus Rex, Sophocles uses dramatic irony throughout the play. Creon tells Oedipus that the murderer of King Laois must die in order for Thebes to recuperate from the plague. Oedipus shows concern for the well-being of the city but also for himself. He says that he will ââ¬Å"avenge the city and the cityââ¬â¢s godâ⬠(Sophocles 9). He further exclaims that ââ¬Å"for [his] own sake, [he will] get rid of evilâ⬠because the murderer of King Laois might ââ¬Å"decide at any moment to kill [him]â⬠(Sophocles 9). Although Oedipus shows true concern for Thebes, his pride propels him to state that he will get rid of the murderer for his own benefits. The dramatic irony is that Oedipus is unable to realize that he will not benefit because he will ultimately have to be punished. Oedipusââ¬â¢ misconception connects to the theme because Oedipus fails to see that he is the murderer of King Laois. Dramatic irony is also shown after Iocaste realizes that Oedipusââ¬â¢ prophecies have come true and Oedipus refuses to give up his search for the truth of his birthplace. Oedipus says that he ââ¬Å"is a child of Luck; [and that he] cannot be dishonoredâ⬠(Sophocles 58). The irony is that the audience knows Oedipusââ¬â¢ tragic fate, yet Oedipus believes he is a child of luck. The irony relates to the theme because his pride blinds him to see the reality that he has fulfilled his prophecies. The overall use of dramatic irony enhances the theme of pride preventing a person from seeing things logistically. In addition to irony, Sophocles uses characterization throughout the play to enhance the theme. For instance, Tiresias, a blind prophet reveals Oedipusââ¬â¢ fate and Oedipus refuses to believe it. When Tiresias accuses Oedipus of weaving his own doom, Oedipus objects by exclaiming that he saves Thebes by defeating the Sphinx. He says that Tiresiasââ¬â¢ magic ââ¬Å"or the gods, for the matterâ⬠are useless (Sophocles 22). Oedipus is indirectly characterized as very self-centered and haughty. Oedipusââ¬â¢ ego relates to theme because he is so cocky that he does not perceive what Tiresias is saying. Instead, he reminds everyone of the time that he defeats the Sphinx. Oedipus gloats on past victories without dealing with present problems involving Thebes. Along with being self-centered, Sophocles characterizes Oedipus by incorporating epithets into the chorusââ¬â¢ lines. Oedipus summons the shepherd in search of primary proof of the murdering of King Laois. The chorus explicitly calls Oedipus a ââ¬Å"tyrant [who is a] child of Prideâ⬠and that his ââ¬Å"haughtiness and high hand of disdain/ Tempt and outrage Godââ¬â¢s holy lawâ⬠(Sophocles 46). Oedipus is indirectly characterized as a tyrant. The chorus denounces their King, which relates to the theme because Oedipusââ¬â¢ pride leads him to be ââ¬Å"caught up in a net of painâ⬠(Sophocles 46). By using characterization, the author shows the reader how Oedipusââ¬â¢ pride leads to his downfall. Hubris often leads to a tragic fall and causes people to become oblivious to the real world. Sophocles creates dramatic irony in the play Oedipus Rex to enhance the plot. The use of dramatic irony highlights how blind Oedipus is to his fate. It shows how Oedipusââ¬â¢ life changes from being a majestic King to an egocentric man who has given up all hope. Oedipus Rex leads the reader into analyzing his or her own life. People should be proud of their achievements as long as they avoid becoming insolent. A healthy dose of pride always does a person well, but an exuberant amount of it, makes him or her ignorant to the truth.

Spectroscopy Lab Report
cName: Nicholas CasselGen Chem 1210 23 March 2013 Blinded By the Light Abstract: In this experiment we were provided a cereal box spectrometer to observe the emission lines of noble gases and hydrogen. Based on the scale readings on the spectrometer and the Balmer-Rydberg formula, their wavelengths and percent error were able to be extrapolated. Based on the literature values, the cereal box spectrometer proved its value as a decently accurate spectrometer. Introduction: Every element and subsequent atom associated emits light; also know as electromagnetic radiation, when in an excited state.Analyzing this emitted light can give insight to the makeup and characteristics of them. The light given off by an energetically excited atom is not a continuous distribution of all possible wavelengths, but rather consists of a few wavelengths giving a series of discrete lines. Spectroscopy is the analysis of that emitted light and its dispersion into to itââ¬â¢s component wavelengths and col ors. Niels Bohr explained the discrete spectrum of hydrogen? by relating it to the electron. Normally the electron in the hydrogen atom is located in the first energy-level.When a hydrogen atom atoms gains energy, the electron moves from a lower energy-level to one of higher energy. The energy gained by the atom is exactly the amount of energy needed to move the electron from the lower energy-level to the higher energy-level. With its electron in a higher energy-level, the atom is now in an unstable, higher energy, excited state. The tendency is for electrons to occupy the lowest level available. So shortly after gaining the energy, the electron returns to a lower energy-level. Energy must be given up when this occurs, and the energy is lost as light. Each line in the emitted light of hydrogen represents the movement of an electron from a specific outer level to a specific inner one. We judge this emitted light against the electromagnetic spectrum with a spectrometer. A spectrometer is an instrument that gathers light particles (photons) and is able to determine the chemical make-up of the source. A spectrometer breaks up a beam of light into its component colors. Usually it uses a prism or a diffraction grating. Light goes in as a beam of white light and is split into a rainbow. Particular atoms generate light at particular frequencies (colors) and so can be identified in the lab.The electromagnetic spectrum is the range of all possible wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation. This range extends from sub-radio waves to gamma rays. Visible light falls within this spectrum. The light emitted by each element is independently different and has different ââ¬Å"colorsâ⬠that can be seen on the spectrum. The Balmer-Rydberg formula is used to describe the emission lines of hydrogen across the entire spectrum and not just visible light. The purpose of this laboratory experiment is to see the emitted wavelengths of elements through a spectroscope and calculate th e wavelengths with the Balmer-Rydberg formula. Then with the calculations, relate them to the atom. I believe that with the correct calculations and comparisons the wavelengths, each emission line will be able to be determined. Experimental The procedures as per the lab manual page 258 (Grossie, Underwood, 2012) were to first calibrate our spectroscope with helium. Looking at helium through the spectroscope, the emission lines where seen and recorded. That data was then put into Microsoft Excel and put into a graph. From the graph a formula was extrapolated. The spectroscope was used to observe and record the fours spectral lines of hydrogen. The calibration plot from helium determine the wavelengths of each of the lines by extrapolation. Comparing the calculated wavelengths to those determined from the calibration plot, and then calculate the percent error for the values. Then the spectroscope was used to view the spectral lines of argon, krypton, neon and Xenon. These noble gasses a re then calculated in the same manner as hydrogen. Data Results The wavelengths (? ) for helium for the calibration were given to us in our lab manual on page 261 (Grossie, D. , et al. 2012). With the spectroscope, the helium in the discharge tube was observed. The emission line scale eading and colors were then recorded on table 1. 1 which can be found below. These values where then put into an excel spreadsheet and graph was formed (table 1. 2). An equation was then extrapolated from the data that would give the experimental wavelength (expt ? ) values that will be used for later values. The trend line for table 1. 2 was established to see the relationship between wavelength and scale readings. Expt ? =a ? +b Expt ? =7. 1541 ? + 343. 12 TABLE 1. 1 Helium Calibration ? The calculated wavelength (Calc ? ) was determined by the Balmer-Rydberg formula. 1? =R(1m2-1n2) R=Rydberg Constant=1. 0968x107m-1 The percent error was then calculated by the following equation. error %=(calc ? -expt ? )calc ? This is because the longer the wavelength is, the less energy it has. The emission lines of hydrogen were then observed and recorded on table 1. 3 with the scale readings. The m and n levels were already given to us on the table prior to the beginning of the lab.Using the Balmer-Rydberg formula, the wavelength could be calculated. Using the calibration of helium, the experimental calculation was able to be determined with the equation extrapolated from excel. The two results gave rise to the error calculations. Comparing the hydrogen results with tables 1. 4 ââ¬â 1. 7, its can be seen that there is a trend of the longer the wavelength is, the more percent error there is. Through our cereal box spectrometers, the emission lines of the low energy waves viewed a the color red are more broad than that of the high energy waves because theirs are much longer respectively. This makes it more difficult to determine the exact scale reading. With the correct calculations as proposed, each emission line was able to be determined. Conclusion The ability to observe emission lines then decipher the element is a useful application in the fields of astronomy. Astronomers are able to view the emissions and determine the chemical make up of a specific object billions of miles away. The data collected indicated that as the lower the energy of the waves, there was a error percentage. This error is also from a cereal box spectrometer. It can be inferred that there is an inherent amount of decreased precision in assessing the scale readings. Future experiments could still make use of the cereal box but also have a laboratory quality spectrometer to compare accuracy too. There could be significant human error in the construction of the cereal box versions. The results of thi s experiment, bar any inaccuracy, where still in line of the calibrated helium. The Monkey’s Paw: the Light Footprint of British History
The Monkey's Paw: The Light Footprint of British History by M. Lutfi / 1104391 Written in 1906, ââ¬Å"The Monkey's Pawâ⬠is a story about Whites' family who received a dried ââ¬Å"monkey's pawâ⬠, dubbed as a magical item which will grant their three wishes, from one of their friend, Sergeant-Major Morris. Taking it as a joke, they wished for two hundred pounds, which they later get in the expense of the death of their son, Herbert. Hopeless, they then wished for their son to come back into life, only to realize that those wish won't become true. This story is particularly interesting because the author chose to portray the life of an average English family life, and how they deal with issues such as death of a family member, while still talking about the larger issues in the Victorian age, such as Industrial Revolution, the belief to the spiritual or mythical deity, and cultural issues related to the imperialism. In the start of this story, the reader is presented with the visit of Sergeant-Major Morris to the Whites' family villa, with a ââ¬Å"souvenirâ⬠which happened to be a ââ¬Å"magicâ⬠monkey's paw from India. After this scene, readers can infer that there's a cultural exchange from the colonized country (as India is one of the country that was colonized by England). The ââ¬Å"magicâ⬠monkey paw might be a souvenir or a charm given by locals ââ¬â at that age, giving a charm to people going overseas was considered to be a symbol of tribute. By accepting the paw, Sergeant-Major Morris successfully brought a piece of Indian culture relic to the UK, and it also could be read as the writer's attempt to say that behind the colonialism, there's some hope of peace and understanding left. Then the story moves forward to the act in which they doubted the effect of the charm. The act could be read as an attempt to introduce how people tend to question the spiritual belief system. In the age where new ideas, founding in science, and inn ovations were praised a lot, people started to question everything ââ¬â how things work, how the earth functions, and so on. Peoples tend to believe things when they see the ââ¬Å"proofâ⬠, especially when the social situation also pledged uncertainty. After they wished to the monkey's paw, they had their wish come true, but in the expense of their son passed away.If the readers read critically to the story, they can find two issues being addressed here by the writer; how one's life revolves, and another bigger issue: the darker side of Industrial Revolution. From the aforementioned scene, the writer hides the message about how one's life revolve; we gain one thing in our life, then we also lose another. You can't be greedy and wish for everything in this life to be picture-perfect; it's a given. This way, the writer addressed, and criticized, eloquently the greediness of imperialists. Another thing to note from this scene is that the Industrial Revolution is not all that f riendly to the humanity. The movement, which starts in the middle of 19th century and ends before World War, is a movement which focused to change the manufacturing process from manual to automatic, using machines to achieve such goal. However, it caused significant damage to the society and labor issues is not an exception. Lots of people became victim; either became dead, lost their job, or got below-average wages. In this story, the cruelness of Industrial Revolution is depicted subtly, but it did leave an impression to the readers. The story reached its end by the couple wishing their son come back into life to the monkey's paw, but their wish was unfulfilled. In this scene, it can be concurred that the writer's trying to remind people to remain rational when times went rough ââ¬â doing irrational things won't help the situation at all, as depicted in this scene. ââ¬Å"The Monkey's Pawâ⬠is a good read for those interested in the British history. The story flows nicely, the character was depicted vividly, and the diction is not too hard to understand. The issues discussed here are also explained in a way that won't make anyone frown, even though the story talks about one of the darkest part of the world history.

Topics in cultural studies Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Topics in cultural studies - Research Paper Example Western civilization was often founded on the ideal of the existence of some form of hierarchy that determined the manner in which cultures related on the score of power. Stronger cultures have a tendency of influencing weaker cultures in the multiple discourses that bring both cultures into contact with each other. On this score, it is often assumed that cultural expression of one culture will necessarily determine the nature and extent to which such a culture expresses its own values with other cultures. Western cultures adopted a central perspective in which they assumed that all other cultures were essentially inferior. The discourse of culture was considered in terms of the hierarchy that existed between western cultures and the other cultures (Hause & Maltby, 2004). The manifestation of the struggle often entailed an active engagement with the hierarchical determination of the relative strength and weaknesses between the cultures. As a result, only the cultures that had their i nternal structures managed to overcome the stifling influences of western cultures. The power of cultural expression worked in a manner that brought together the various discourses that embraced western cultures and non-western cultures. ... Western civilization adopted philosophies that determined perspectives on other foreign influences. It might be argued that some of the discourses that defined the world outside the boundaries of western civilization essentially determined the manner in which these civilizations engaged with other forms of civilization. The discourses of orientalism, racism, and colonialism were necessarily conditioned by cultural perceptions of the presumed superiority of western civilization to other forms of civilization (Sherman, 2006). For instance, the west considered the East within the discourse of orientalism. There was a sense in which the East was considered as an alien culture and necessarily inferior to western culture. Such perceptions also underpinned the desire to conquer and subdue any other cultures that were perceived as inferior. The deliberate misrepresentation of cultural facts was meant to make the other cultures subordinate to western civilization. Such cultural perceptions ju stified the need to conquer foreign lands and to subdue other races that were defined by the relative weaknesses of cultural civilizations. Matters of cultural superiority might be considered in terms of the manner in which they engaged with processes that determine the relative strength between cultures. Essentially, other cultures were considered as inferior and deserving to be conquered and subdued. It might be necessary to consider the element of civilization within the broad perspective of cultural relationships. Assumptions of strength within the framework of cultural expression were considered as the pivotal point, which determined the kind of relationship between the west and

Opposing War On Iraq And Its Effects Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Opposing War On Iraq And Its Effects - Essay Example The poetry of the revolutionary war is likely to be arithmetic and sentimental. The outcome of this war on an individual has generated a body of work that rivals the literary response to combat itself. Subject to this matter, the inversion of war may well turn out to be the greatest strategic disaster to the American history. What motivates bloody contests between two rivals is a defense fought by a greedy power against an equally greedy attacker thus creating a war between them. In ancient days, the war was made up of War World I and World War II. The chapter will also discuss the outcome if a different procedure had been followed, and finding an approach that can solve the lingering effects. At the early American military history, it had a few activities of the armies and a clash of nations. It was identified as little war and it waged against many countries. The study of America military history began as an attempt to address wars under the low-intensity conflict. However, early A mericans understood war as a tool to disrupt enemy troop, supply networks and gathering intelligence through scouting, ambushing and destroying enemy detachments. They also destroyed rivalââ¬â¢s villages, field, assassinating them and intimidating enemies in the population. The American way of war established a model that most scholars used to clarify the American tradition. However, the first way of war became a preferred tool of conquest in America which united behind the war effort. This war also had a far-reaching repercussion for the United States Navy (Grenier, Pg 113). The war made it compulsory for many people to transform their personal views of the globe around them. It also brought changes in how people viewed their country. Before the war, most Americans viewed the United States initially, not as a nation but union of states.

Criminology - Movie Review Example New Yearââ¬â¢s Eve celebration was launched by the gangs in the name of a military operation whereby each character take a specific role. For instance, Josh Howard (Davis) was to drive a garbage truck while the rest were to steal from various casinos. Sam Harmon. Charges were made on replacing the electrical transmission tower and in each casino electrical systems to give a backup are rewired. At midnight when everyone is celebrating and singing in all the casino the tower was placed down and darkness that was inevitable sets occurs. Funny enough the cashier cages containing money are opened instantly by the backup electrical systems contrary to putting on the emergency lights. In no waste of time, they moved into the cashier cages and stole the money. They removed money from bags and dump the bags in the garbage bin. Creatively they went back and joined the crowd pretending they were among them. Immediately lights were back, the thieves left the casinos. Josh drove the garbage truck and collects the bags passing through the blockade of the police with absence of people notice. Coincidentally Tony Bergdorf (Conte) who was an electrician got a heart attack and dropped dead in the middle of Las Vegas strip. This death caused a lot of concern as police wondered whether there was any connection with the robbery. Duke Santos (Romeo) gets reformed and decided to get back the casino bossesââ¬â¢ money for a return. In this scenario, he learns of Ocean and is connected to Foster, the son of Dukeââ¬â¢s fiancà ©e (chase). Person contemplates about that before the return of Bergdorfââ¬â¢s body at mortuary. Santos talked to the robberies asking for half of the money. Nevertheless $10000 was set for the widow (Jean Willies) of the electrician and the rest hidden in the coffin. Creatively the group had planned to take the money in no return to Santos after coffin is taken to Francisco. However, the

Forecasting Techniques In Aviation Industry Essay
Forecasting Techniques In Aviation Industry - Essay Example The company developed and implemented a global supply chain solution. This enabled the company to deliver on board customer services as one of the largest airline firms of the world. The company is first to personalize the service for the valued customers. The technology partners of the company are industry matematik International (IMI), Manugistics. One of the most valued strength of the company is committed and professional people in the staff. The majority of the staff in BA is willing to own a problem and is capable of chasing it exemplary. 1 The British Airways demonstrated the compatibility of pleasure and profits. The organization in the company presented its culture as the explanation for the transformation. The organizational environment at the time of transformation resulted in structural changes observing the impact of them in the long term. The organizational structure of the firm exhibited no corporate friction. In general the corporate friction targets to promote positive attitudes by increasing employee's area of responsibility. This system will align financial interests. BA's organizational structure targeted employee attitudes and aimed at secure commitment. The structure did not resign behavioral compliance as staff has common vision in working together. 2 1.2 Problem definition and analysis: The problem conside... When the items are slow moving, generally they are not available readily and the maintenance of those parts by the company can be a burden of inventory. As airlines are a service industry, the maintenance of an inventory to avoid shortage of spare parts is not cost effective practice. One of the possible solutions is the forecasting techniques for the shortage of spares. The forecasting of the problem helps in acquiring the required parts in a particular period of time for the aircrafts of the firm. The all zero, several levels of demand lumpiness, demand variation and ordering, holding and shortage cost are the few models that can be useful in fore casting the shortage of spares in the airlines firm. The evaluation of the forecasting methods by three measures of forecast error and other measures by inventory cost is recommended. All zero forecasts yield the lowest cost when the lumpiness is high. The bid lumpiness also requires the zero forecasts when the shortage cost is more than the holding cost. The maintenance of the spares in the form of inventory should be termed as cost effective when the cost incurred on the company due to shortage is more than the holding cost of the spares in the form of inventory.3 2. Literature Review 2.1 Forecasting demands and Challenges: A.A. Ghobbar in 1994 stated that the most accurate forecasting method on the basis of demand pattern fluctuation in the industry. The average mean absolute percentage error can help in selecting the forecasting methods. The average inner demand interval categorisation can establishes the validity of the factor ranges as a crucial finding. This will simplify and segment the results obtained by evaluating the forecasting methods and

European Union's State Development Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
European Union's State Development - Case Study Example (Boromisa 2004).A thorough knowledge of the impacts of the monitoring and evaluation of the candidate countries is indispensable for a the success of the upcoming talks in 2009 for Croatia. This is because the progress of the candidate countries is monitored and evaluated regularly once a year by the European Commission and its main findings are published in Regular Reports.Even after the candidates are have signed the Accession treaty they are still monitored. This evident from the recent "Monitoring Report of the European Commission on the State of Preparedness for EU Membership of the Czech Republic, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia" (European Commission, 2004c).When Croatia was given the candidate status it was stated by the European Council at Brussels stated that "The European Councilconfirms that the negotiations will be based on Croatia's own merits and that the pace of accession will depend solely on Croatia's progress in meeting the requirements for membership". (European Commission, 2004c).As it can be seen that Croatian candidature was already dependent upon the evaluation of its functioning of the ideals of liberty, democracy and human rights (parliament, executive, judiciary). A stable political and economic system is thus the key to Croatia's success in achieving the timely membership of the EU.For Croatia then the ultimate integration into the EU will means inclusion into the internal market, i.e. free movement of goods, persons, services and capital. (Boromisa, A. and Miki, M., 2003).Also there will be an impact upon the trade patterns followed by the removal of trade barriers (e.g. tariffs, quotas, voluntary export restrictions) and harmonization of policies (e.g. agriculture, competition, trade and industrial). Finally there will also be a multilateralization of individual free trade agreements which will require substantial adjustments to the local investment policy and regulation. It also has to be taken into account that there is a risk of delays in the ratification procedure rises with the number of the EU member.states vying for EU membership increasing. (Boromisa, A. and Miki, M., 2003). Also Croatia might have to deal with some politically tough decisions which may form the basis for the requirements for the EU like decreased public expenditure. (Frederik Sorensen 2001 ) .Current issues faced by the EU include the controversy relating to open skies agreements, and state investor disputes. The issue of Open Skies recently created many headlines and in the context of Croatian membership it can be seen that the matter is no longer economical or legal. The issue is purely political. (Frederik Sorensen 2001 ). This became a tug of war that took place between EU and USA authorities over the recent Open Skies Agreement. The Agreement aims to liberalise transatlantic airspace yet European transport Ministers were reluctant to agree to it at first as they felt it gave the US an unfair advantage over European interests and its

Professional Conduct in IT Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Professional Conduct in IT - Assignment Example As an employee, I am an agent to my employer. My employer would be vicariously liable for my wrongful acts within the scope of my employment, and if I were to decide to fix the system, the criminal liability of abetting tax would also fall on my employer (Berta, 2003). I am required to exercise due diligence in the normal course of my duties for the company, since any misconduct on my part could place civil or criminal liability on my employer. My duty as an IT practitioner is to provide professional review of systems in accordance to existing laws and regulations. I also have the duty of improving public understanding of computing, and I should use my professional knowledge and expertise to offer comprehensive evaluations of computer systems (ACM 2008). As such, I would make the clients understand the possible consequences of subjecting the system to wrongful use, as they are obviously doing. I would not go to the extent of reporting the matter to the authorities. However, although I have the duty to maintain client confidentiality, I would report my diagnosis of the system to my employer, and explain that my failure to fix the problem is due to its contradiction with my IT professional ethics. Reporting the matter to the authorities does not fall under my area of expertise, and I am only liable for actions falling under my professional duty to either my employer or the customers. My professional ethics cover the area of IT, guiding my relations with the client and employer, product management, professional judgment, and overall professional conduct (IEEE Computer Society 2011). As such, I would not be held professionally responsible for not reporting the matter to the authorities. However, my personal moral principles would determine the extent to which I go in search of justice for the companyââ¬â¢s tax fraud. Professionally, the practitioner has a duty to the employer as well as to the customer, and is also required to maintain proper conduct in adherence to professional code of conduct. If faced with the request to fix the system, I would decline based on the illegality of the practice being upheld. As a professional, I should not make deliberate deceptive claims concerning a system, but should instead disclose any pertinent issue evident in the system (Peslak 2007). In this case, I would make it known to the clients that their system is faulty due to its application in unlawful practices. I would be honest with the clients, letting them know where the problem is in the

Analysis The lady with the petdog Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Analysis The lady with the petdog - Essay Example Their love is under the test of rationality and the lens of morality. Chekhovââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Lady with the Pet Dogâ⬠uses ambiguity, setting, characterization, and realism to suggest that love has no logic, explanation, and morality, but people continue to fight for it because it is the only thing that makes them truly happy. Love has no logic. Chekhov uses ambiguity in language to show that love does not make any sense. Gurov does not find his affairs satisfying in the long run. He just knows that he attracts women enough for them to ââ¬Å"favorâ⬠him, including sexually favoring him (Chekhov par.5). These sexual favors are short and sweet, until his heart chooses to favor someone forever. Favor is an ambiguous word, whose final interests are unclear. In the story, favor motivates two married people to prioritize their self-interests, to the risk of breaking the laws of God and man. One more example shows ambiguity. After making love, Anna feels sorry for the affair. Chekhov describes her as a ââ¬Å"Magdaleneâ⬠¦by an old masterâ⬠(par.39), perhaps even worse because she is not a prostitute, but she has given her married body to another married person. Her monologue, however, bores Gurov: ââ¬Å"â⬠¦he was irritated by her naive tone, by her repentance, so unexpected and out of placeâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Chekhov par.36). ... Aside from language, characterization enables Chekhov to demonstrate that people may be opposite in many ways, but love can still bind them. Gurov is old and a self-confessed womanizer, while Anna is young and inexperienced with affairs. They seem an unlikely pair, especially when they have some sense of ââ¬Å"fearâ⬠for their spouses (Chekhov par.4). They fear them because they are with them, despite the absence of love. Furthermore, Gurov thinks that there is nothing special about him, while Anna finds him as the best kind of man. For Gurov, he is only an old man ââ¬Å"almost twice her age,â⬠but Anna sees him as ââ¬Å"kind, exceptional, high-mindedâ⬠(Chekhov par.58). Evidently, love has skewed their assessment of true identities. Their love blinded them of the ability to see each otherââ¬â¢s worst faults. One of the greatest sources of the irrationality of their love is its depravity. Their affair is wrong but they want to continue anyway, even when at first, they are unsure of what they have. Anna becomes restless and cannot sleep (Chekhov par.52). These are signs of guilt. They are both married, but they are in love with each other, not their spouses. In addition, they are hesitant of what they have, until Anna leaves Gurov. When Anna sees ââ¬Å"dew on the grassâ⬠(Chekhov par.49), it represents something new, the dawn of love. The dew is fresh and refreshing. Their love awakens their old grass. But the dew will evaporate at the light of day. The sun is their morality. Their dew is against this morality, and it is illogical to continue it. They are struggling to hide their love, when they can always end it to conclude their miseries (Chekhov par.52). They feel ââ¬Å"dreadâ⬠(Chekhov par.52) of being caught, being judged. Why suffer these complications? They
